Measuring For Shutters in Clearwater

October 04, 2017

Interior shutters in Clearwater are almost always priced on a square foot basis, so if you need a measurement for a price estimate, simply measure your window width and length, to the nearest eighth of an inch.

How to Measure Rectangular and Square Windows for Shutters

Common rectangular windows sound like they’d be the easiest ones to measure – and they are, compared to other specialty windows. But you still have an entire process to follow to find your measurements. Here’s the plan.

The Tools That You Need:

  • Metal tape measure

  • Pen and paper

Starting off, measure the width (the left-to-right distance). Measure across in three separate spots: as close as you can to the center, close to the top, and near the bottom of the frame. Mark down all of them, to the nearest eighth of an inch. After that, measure the length (vertical) – take three measurements, one in the center, and one close to either edge of the window as seen below.

The reason you need to measure in three spots each direction is because no window is a truly perfect square. And because you might need a specific mount for your window, you may either need to record the smallest measurement (inside mount), or the longest measurement (for an outside mount). Taking measurements in multiple places ensures that your bases are covered.

How to Measure Unique Shape Windows for Shutters

Non-square windows are the windows that can present a challenge to measure. Just like there’s no such thing as a perfectly square window, there’s no such thing as a perfect arch or octagonal window – and that means that taking the right measurements can be problematic. For the best results, get a professional measurement (which Sunburst Shutters Clearwater is happy to do for free). Otherwise, these are the steps to measure most types of unique-shaped windows for shutters.

How to Measure Arch and Semicircle Windows for Shutters

Start by measuring the width of the window at the flat side. Measuring only the window opening, record to the closest eighth of an inch the width of the arch. Moving on to the height, locate the halfway point of the window by dividing the width measurement in half, then measure to the top of the window from that point. Again, record to the nearest eighth of an inch.

Measuring Elongated Arch Windows

Elongated arch windows are almost like a combination of a circular or rectangular, with a wide, flat bottom and straight “legs,” but with rounded corners at the top and a taller arch. So attack it like that: a square and an arch on top of each other. Measure the width like you would any other arch, then record the height of the legs (the straight vertical parts before the window curves). Last, measure the maximum height of the window from the middle of the width, subtracting the height of the legs. Again, write down all of these to the nearest eighth of an inch.

Measuring Circular & Octagonal Windows

Octagonal and circular windows are some of the hardest to get accurate measurements, as there can be a ton of small imperfections that can alter the dimensions of the shutters you may need. We strongly recommend leaving these ones to professionals.
